The aim of THRIVE

The aim of the game is threefold:

1. 'THRIVE' is a board game designed to challenge individuals beliefs, actions and behaviours in relation to their health.. In this game, healthy lifestyle choices are rewarded and unhealthy habits are penalised. The desire is that people playing 'THRIVE' will reflect upon their own life choices, especially the poor choices that are made and look for better, healthier ways of living. If people apply the principles learned from 'THRIVE' to their daily lives, they will find that they are building towards becoming physically healthier, emotionally more resilient and socially more confident.

2. 'THRIVE' has been designed to teach players the principles of dream building, goal setting, action planning and reflective judgment in order to achieve the goals they set in their lifetime. Thrive is a non-threatening way to illustrate that by healthy living and by making wise life choices, wealth can be achieved and goals set can be met.

3. 'THRIVE' has also been designed as a fun communication tool which can encourage and enhance communication and understanding between teenagers, their families and friends.

How to play the game

Thrive is a board game similar to many popular games where players move around a board.

The Thrive game board contains squares with different health habits and attitudes. Each square has a point value. Most are positive, but there are some negative ones. There are also two sets of cards. Action cards contain life events. Again some have positive points and others are negative. It is a game of consequence. Good habits and attitude are rewarded. Poor habits and attitudes are penalized. E.g. if a player lands on the smoking square, they are penalized. Choice cards contain life scenarios. Another player reads the card to you and there are 4 options. The choice made determines if you get negative or positive points.

Each player is given a goal sheet on which there are places for 4 goals. Players set their own personal goals. A money value can be placed on each goal. Each player keeps their own score with a scoring device provided. Points are accumulated to meet goals in the full version. The points are converted into money according to a conversion chart. When a player has enough money to buy the first set goal he/she moves the marker to the second goal. The first player to pay for the 4th goal wins. If these goals are then realized in life, all players are winners.

The junior version does not have money. The junior cards talk more on manners and safety. The goals for the Junior game are something to HAVE, something to DO and something to BE.
